The Slangkop Lighthouse - Kommetjie, Cape Town
{{ imageDescription }}
The Slankkop Lighthouse is situated in the beautiful town of Kommetjie in Cape Town, South Africa. The lighthouse stands 33m (100 ft) tall from base to the balcony and is the tallest iron tower on the South African Coast. The revolving electric light has an approximate candle power of 5 000 000 C.D and this allows it to often remain visible even through thick mist.
This lighthouse was commissioned in 1914 as a safeguard against shipwrecks along the rocky shoreline of the Southern Coast. However due to the outbreak of the First World War the lighthouse was not fully completed until 1919, although during this time there are reports that it was in use. The Slangkop Lighthouse draws its power from the Cape Municipality and has a back up in case of a power failure.
There are guided tours offered at the Lighthouse where you will get to meet the Senior Lighthouse Keeper and you can climb the spiral staircase to the top of the lighthouse. You will get to learn about the history of the lighthouse and hear many more interesting stories about the lighthouse. The views from above are worth the climb.
